Purpose: Ramosetron and Palonosetron are new selective 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists that reportedly have more potent antiemetic effects compared with other 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. The aim of this study was to compare two commonly used prophylactic antiemetics: ramosetron and palonosetron in patients undergoing brest and laparoscopic gynecological surgery.
Methods: 60 Patients received either ramosetron 0.3 mg (Group R, n = 30) or palonosetron 0.075 mg (Group P, n = 30), intravenously, at the induction of general anaesthesia. The incidences of PONV and complete response were assessed during the first 24 hours after surgery, using Rhodes Index. Also, the usage of rescue antiemetics and pain intensity were recorded.
Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the incidence of complete response and the Rhodes Index between the two groups during 24 hours. Also, there were no statistically significant differences in the proportion of patients who required rescue drugs between the two groups.
Conclusions: Prophylactic ramosetron and palonosetron reduced the incidence of PONV after brest and laparoscopic gynecological surgery during the first 24 postoperative hours.
